Twenty-Six

Ozzy and Tara stood by the window of the cabin overlooking the porch and the driveway beyond as their parents, bundled up against the cold, shuffled through the snow. Quickly disappearing into the dark.

“Where are they going?” Ozzy asked, as they watched the large cone of their father’s purple flashlight shrink to nothing. Tara didn’t answer.

“What’s out there?”

Ozzy stared at his older sister, staring silently into the storm, her face close enough to the window to frost the glass.

“Tara?”

Ozzy’s shrill, scared little voice seemed to snap his sister out of her trance. Tara blinked and then she fixed her green eyes on him.

She said finally. “We need to find those truck keys. Or a phone.”

“But we looked everywhere already.”

“So, we’re gonna look again.” She told him. “We have to leave, Ozzy.”

Tara nudged him toward the kitchen.

“Start in there. I’ll check the back rooms again. And stay away from that goddamn bookshelf.”

“I’m gonna tell mom you swore.” Ozzy told her, but his heart wasn’t in it and his sister just rolled her eyes as she spun away down the hall.

“This is bullshit.” He whispered under his breath as he pulled open the first kitchen drawer. He found a notepad, a bunch of pens and spare door handles. Satisfied there were no car keys hiding inside, he moved onto the next one.

Such bullshit.
